Target audience improved.
The target audience for my magazine will be people interested in chart music (probably the younger teen generation). I have chose this as I feel it will relate to a wider audience. I altered the name of my magazine a few time, first I decided on Rhythm, then I finally decided on CM, which stands for Chart Music. I feel this will relate to the younger generation more, and with the colour scheme, the design and the layout, it links to the ideology very well.

Target audience for my music magazine
The target audience for my music magazine will prefebly be aimed towards younger people, such as under 25, with the gender being suitable for both male and female readers. The genre I am aiming to achieve with my magazine is alternative/chart, which I feel that the younger generation can relate to. I feel that magazines such as Spin, NME and Q have influenced me to think of these ideas, due to the fact I feel I can achieve this ideology well. I feel that the models I will choose to use as my front cover will represent the chart sort of genre very well because of their style choice and the location in which I will take the photographs.

Audience Feedback and Evaluation.
Audience feedback and Evaluation – Charlotte Hemsworth.
Audience feedback.
Rebecca Linford – Business and Accounting student: “I would read this magazine as the colour scheme looks suitable for any student, it looks professional by the way it is set out and the images and the text are set out very clear.”
Georgia Roe – Theatre studies and English language student: “The magazine is very professional looking and I would read it because it isn’t gender associated, it looks suitable for all types of students and looks relatable.”
Louise Smith – Media studies and Psychology student: “You have used Photoshop very well by editing the photograph and text in order to make the magazine cover look professional. The colour scheme is good and the ideology of the magazine will relate to many of the students at the college, therefore I would read this magazine.”
Evaluation.
In what ways does your college magazine use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
- I have used many features to challenge forms and conventions of real media products, to make my college magazine seem more professional. For example, on the main cover of my magazine I have used a barcode, which represents the realism used in real media products and this is what I wanted to achieve when creating my magazine. I have also developed the idea of challenging real media products, by using all images put together and edited myself which gives the magazine a college type theme, which is what the magazine is all about. I have kept the colour scheme and the text/font constant throughout the front cover, and the layout is similar to those of real magazines, which makes the magazine seem more professional and carefully constructed.
In what ways does your college magazine represent particular social groups – students and/or teachers?
- I feel I have included many features in my magazine which will relate to and represent particular social groups at the college. I have included a section in which the students can talk about the college parties, get involved in competitions to win prizes, and also a chance to ask questions and discuss any questions the students may have, by emailing the college or writing to the magazine itself. Therefore, I feel this represents the social side of the college very well, and this is the ideology I was aiming for when thinking of ideas for my magazine to be based on. I also included images of students from the college, to attract people into reading the magazine as well as making it look more professional.
Who would be the audience of your college magazine?
- The audience of my college magazine would most definitely be students at the college, due to many features I have used relating to them. The tone of text I have used is as if the writer is having a conversation with the reader, and this I feel is important in attracting college students to buy and read the magazine. With me including many relatable features in my magazine, such as the college parties and competitions in which the students can get involved in, I feel that the biggest reader of this magazine is obviously students from the college itself.
How did you attract your audience?
- I have used many different features within the front cover of my magazine to attract my audience into reading the magazine. For example, the front cover is an image of a student at the college, and the students could relate to this very well. Also, the tone of text is quite chatty, which represents the tone students always use. The images and colour scheme used are similar/constant throughout which makes the magazine look professional, and therefore I feel the features on the magazine in which I used help to attract the target audience (students) very well.
What have you learnt about the technologies from the process of constructing this college magazine?
- I have learnt many features and technologies from creating this magazine. I used Photoshop to construct most of my magazine, and edited most of my images using the tools provided on the programme. These tools came in useful as they allowed me to finish my final design to the standard I required and made the magazine as professional looking as I required. I was able to use tools to help me cut out the background of images, play around with the colours to see which colour would suit the magazine best, and also which text/font style suited the ideology of the magazine the best. I have learnt lots of technologies and skills from the programmes used to help me create my magazine, and it has helped me to achieve the best possible results for my final design.

Elle magazine LIIAR analysis
Charlotte Hemsworth – LIIAR analysis.
Elle magazine.
L-language.The language used in the magazine is used to capture the attention of the reader. In Elle magazine, the language used relates to the audience well by using smaller features such as ‘Style issue’ and ‘ideas to inspire you’. All of these smaller features and words connote the type of issue which the magazine is advertising. The way the main feature is also laid out includes the main image as part of the title, by including Jennifer Lopez on the main cover, next to the name of the magazine.
I-Ideology.
The ideology of the magazine relates to the audience very well, because the target audience would be women, and because Jennifer Lopez is on the front representing this, it relates very well.
The colour scheme of the magazine is also grey, gold and black; which connotes glamour, and this is what the magazine is trying to achieve through the ideology. I-Institution.The publishers of Elle magazine achieve the ideology well by advertising certain issues of the magazine every so often, for example the issue that I am evaluating is the ‘personal style issue’. Also, they achieve this by using the smaller features to catch the attention of the reader and make them want to read further into the magazine. The word ‘You’ is often used, appealing to the audience because it gives a sense of realism that the publisher is talking to the reader, and involving them in the magazine.
A-Audience.
The target audience of the magazine is women, and Elle achieve this very well by using a female model as the main image on the front of the magazine. Also, the colour scheme is black, grey and gold which connotes glamour, which is generally associated with women. Also, the smaller features used are mostly about style and fashion which appeals to the target audience- women.
R-Representation.
The magazine represents fashion and style in this certain issue, as the main feature and the skyline shows on the front cover. The way in which the magazine represents what it is advertising is very well done, as it uses a range of media language devices such as skylines and main images to advertise it.

College magazine LIIAR analysis
Charlotte Hemsworth – LIIAR analysis.
College magazine.L- Language. The language used on the magazine advertisement is almost teen-related language, and uses statements and sentences such as ‘She’s 15 and pregnant’ and ‘Smoking Saliva?’ These are smaller features, which capture the reader’s attention and make them want to read more. The masthead is the word ‘College’ in bold, large font, and the colour red. This relates to the colour scheme of the magazine, as the main image features a college student wearing red, which relates well to the ideology.
I-Ideology.
The ideology used in the magazine is usually what the magazine is talking about or advertising. The main feature/headline of the magazine usually captures this, however because this college magazine doesn’t include a main feature, the smaller features or the image could connote what the magazine is about. The colour scheme is red, blue and white, and the main image shows a college student wearing a t-shirt with these colours on, possibly representing the college itself.I-Institution.The institution of the magazine is based on who made the magazine and where it is from. The college magazine I am annotating looks as if it is created by the college itself. However because the magazine includes a barcode, this could be because it is advertising the college and could be an official magazine which is to be bought by members of the public. Therefore, it looks like it could have been created by a professional company rather than a college.
A-Audience.
The magazine audience is obviously for college students, being a college magazine. Student ages range from 16-19; therefore this would be the target age range. Also, the student population is around 65% female; therefore this could be why the student advertising the magazine as the main image on the front is female. This magazine appeals to its target audience by the main image, as well as using a range of language which appeals to students. Also, smaller features are advertising stories in the magazine by students, which can capture the attention more, as the stories may relate to other students, which will make them eager to by the magazine and read the stories included in the magazine.
R-Representation.
The representation of the magazine is who the magazine represents, and is similar to the target audience. The way in which the magazine is designed and laid out represents college students, for example the girl on the front of the cover is clearly representing college students. Also, the main feature/headline and the smaller features relate to college life, as they represent stories which college students would read. Also, the background/scenery represents student life because it clearly looks like the student on the front cover of the magazine is stood on the college campus which is relevant, and represents the target audience which is students.

Preliminary Brief
Using DTP and an image manipulation programme, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.
