College magazine LIIAR analysis

Charlotte Hemsworth – LIIAR analysis.

College magazine.L- Language. The language used on the magazine advertisement is almost teen-related language, and uses statements and sentences such as ‘She’s 15 and pregnant’ and ‘Smoking Saliva?’  These are smaller features, which capture the reader’s attention and make them want to read more.  The masthead is the word ‘College’ in bold, large font, and the colour red.  This relates to the colour scheme of the magazine, as the main image features a college student wearing red, which relates well to the ideology.
I-Ideology.
The ideology used in the magazine is usually what the magazine is talking about or advertising.  The main feature/headline of the magazine usually captures this, however because this college magazine doesn’t include a main feature, the smaller features or the image could connote what the magazine is about.  The colour scheme is red, blue and white, and the main image shows a college student wearing a t-shirt with these colours on, possibly representing the college itself.
I-Institution.The institution of the magazine is based on who made the magazine and where it is from.  The college magazine I am annotating looks as if it is created by the college itself.  However because the magazine includes a barcode, this could be because it is advertising the college and could be an official magazine which is to be bought by members of the public.  Therefore, it looks like it could have been created by a professional company rather than a college.
A-Audience.
The magazine audience is obviously for college students, being a college magazine. Student ages range from 16-19; therefore this would be the target age range.  Also, the student population is around 65% female; therefore this could be why the student advertising the magazine as the main image on the front is female. This magazine appeals to its target audience by the main image, as well as using a range of language which appeals to students.  Also, smaller features are advertising stories in the magazine by students, which can capture the attention more, as the stories may relate to other students, which will make them eager to by the magazine and read the stories included in the magazine.
R-Representation.
The representation of the magazine is who the magazine represents, and is similar to the target audience.  The way in which the magazine is designed and laid out represents college students, for example the girl on the front of the cover is clearly representing college students. Also, the main feature/headline and the smaller features relate to college life, as they represent stories which college students would read.  Also, the background/scenery represents student life because it clearly looks like the student on the front cover of the magazine is stood on the college campus which is relevant, and represents the target audience which is students.
